Looking at most bicycles available online today and you’ll find that the vast majority of bikes are designed around the male physical build. That’s all well and good but what about us women? We’re built differently and we need a bicycle that’s built different too. Below I’ll outline some basic things to look for in a women’s bicycle.
On average, if man and a woman are the same height there will still be important difference in our build. We have shorter bodies, shorter arms, and longer legs than a man of a similar height. Our hands and our feet are smaller too, our shoulders are narrower and, surprise surprise, our hips are wider than a mans too.
All of these physical differences add up and will change the way a bike feels, fits and handles for us girls.
So we need a women’s bicycle to have the following specifications in order to suit us better:
- the handlebars should be smaller (narrower, shallower drop, and shorter reach)
- the brakes and gear switchers should be sized for smaller hands
- the saddle can be wider in the rear to accommodate a woman’s wider hips.
- the weight and stiffness of the materials used should better suit a lighter-weight rider
